I have worked in IT for about twenty years, and when a small business owner asks me about AI for marketing, they almost always mean one of three jobs: write the words, make the pictures, or get the posts out the door. Generative AI means software that creates new text, images, audio or video from a prompt. This guide follows the searches people run next on Google (free tools, small business stacks, digital marketing, Reddit advice) and gives a straight answer for each. It is based on the vendors' own pages and a few dated guides, and I have not run side-by-side tests of these tools.

Quick answer
  • Start here: one general assistant, ChatGPT or Claude. Both have free plans.
  • Design and social graphics: Canva AI, which Zapier says includes some AI features on its free plan.
  • Video and audio editing: Descript, which has a free plan on its pricing page.
  • On-brand copy for a team: Jasper. A solo owner may not need it yet.
  • Marketing plus CRM: HubSpot AI agents. Social scheduling with AI drafts: Buffer.

Best Generative AI Tools for Marketing

Zapier's research on AI spending (cited in its June 2026 guide to AI marketing tools) found that 86 percent of professionals expected their AI spending to rise over the next year, while 26 percent already named overlapping tools as a barrier to value. In plain words, the risk is not too little AI. It is paying for five tools that do the same job.

Before you buy anything specialized, learn one general assistant well. Ahrefs makes this point in its roundup of AI marketing tools, as quoted in an October 18, 2026 guide from the agency myseoexperts: most marketers already use general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT or Claude for brainstorming, research and drafting. The US Chamber of Commerce's CO guide (published September 22, 2026) describes ChatGPT the same way, as a default tool for drafting copy, outlining campaigns and quick research.

Claude is a good fit for writing and analysis. Zapier calls it a go-to chatbot for creative or analytical work and says its writing needs less cleanup than some rivals, with one complaint: it is easy to hit usage limits on complex tasks. Anthropic's pricing page (read October 25, 2026) lists a Free plan, a Pro plan at $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 billed monthly, and Projects, which let you keep instructions and files together. The product page shows examples for marketers, such as a weekly campaign readout slide and a set of campaign assets.

ChatGPT is the other obvious starting point. Zapier's June 2026 guide calls it one of the easiest ways to generate images and says the free plan has limited image generation, the Go plan is $8 a month and Plus is $20 a month. The CO guide also lists Plus at $20 a month. OpenAI's own pricing page (I could read only the Korean version, which shows prices in won) lists Free, Go and Plus plans, so check the US page for current dollar prices.

Who should start here General assistant

Anyone who writes emails, posts, product descriptions or ads. Skip paid plans if the free plan already covers your week. Upgrade only when you hit limits on a task you do every week.

My take (20 years in IT): Pick one assistant and give it one job for two weeks, such as drafting the weekly newsletter. Keep your facts, prices and promises in your own notes, and paste them in as inputs. The assistant should shape your words, not invent your offer.

Best Free AI Tools for Marketing and Business

Free plans are enough to test almost every tool in this guide. What differs is the limit. This table uses only what the vendors and dated guides said.

ToolWhat the free option gives you
ChatGPTFree plan exists; image generation is limited (Zapier, June 2026)
ClaudeFree plan exists; Projects up to 5 on Free (Anthropic pricing page, Oct 25, 2026)
CanvaFree plan includes some AI features and the AI text-to-image generator (Zapier, June 2026); AI credits are limited (CO, Sept 22, 2026)
DescriptFree plan with 60 minutes of media a month and 100 AI credits, one-time (Descript pricing page, Oct 25, 2026)
BufferBrowser post creator is free up to five posts a day; a free account removes that cap (Buffer page, Oct 25, 2026)
HubSpotZapier describes a free CRM plan with some AI tools; AI agents mostly run on HubSpot Credits (HubSpot page, Oct 25, 2026)

Buffer shows how a free AI feature should work. You type a prompt, the assistant drafts a post, and you can change the tone or length, rephrase, shorten or expand it. Buffer's page also says AI responses can be inaccurate, so always review before posting. A free Buffer account lets you schedule to the major networks it lists, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and Pinterest.

The CO guide gives a useful warning for every free plan: many tools advertise a low headline price, then put the features you want, such as AI credits, integrations or extra seats, in a higher tier. Map what you need each month before you commit.

My take (20 years in IT): Treat free plans as a trial period with a deadline. Write down one task, the time it takes today, and the time it takes with the tool. If you cannot show a saving after two weeks, cancel and move on.

Best AI Tools for Marketing Design and Video

Canva AI is the tool Zapier hands to anyone who needs good-looking graphics without being a designer. Canva's newsroom page on its Canva Create 2025 launches describes Canva AI as a conversational assistant with three starting points: "Design for me," "Create an image" and "Draft a doc." It says Canva AI blends Canva's own models, Leonardo.Ai's Phoenix image model and partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic. The same page says Magic Studio tools such as Magic Write, Background Remover, Translate and Magic Resize can run at scale, including from spreadsheet data, and that Canva Sheets and Canva Code are new. The Photo Editor can generate backgrounds from a text prompt and recolor, remove or replace objects.

Pricing differs by source, so check Canva's own page before you pay. Zapier lists paid plans from $12 a month billed annually. The CO guide lists Canva Pro at $15 a month with 500 AI credits a month and a Brand Kit.

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's generative AI app. Its official page (read October 25, 2026 in a browser) says you can generate and edit images, video, audio and designs using models from Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Kling AI and others, and mentions a Firefly AI Assistant, Boards for collecting and remixing ideas, and generated soundtracks. For business, the question that matters is rights. The myseoexperts guide quotes Adobe's approach page as saying Adobe only trains its models on content where it has permission or rights, and says IP indemnification is available to eligible business customers on qualifying plans. I could not open Adobe's approach page myself because it blocked my access, so read those terms on Adobe's site before you rely on them.

Descript covers the video side. Zapier describes it as an editor where you cut video by deleting words in the transcript, with AI tools for studio-quality audio, multicam and clips for short-form social. Descript's pricing page (read October 25, 2026) lists a Free plan with 60 minutes of media a month, Hobbyist at $16, Creator at $24 and Business at $50 per person a month (the page links point to annual billing), and says AI credits track use of features like Underlord and Studio Sound. The page also says Descript is SOC 2 Type II compliant.

My take (20 years in IT): Video is where a small team saves the most hours, but it is also where mistakes are public. Cut your clip, then watch it once on your phone with the sound on before you post. Only clone or synthesize a voice if you have written permission, and tell viewers when a voice is AI-made.

AI Tools for Digital Marketing Campaigns, Content and Ads

Jasper positions itself as an agent workspace for marketing teams. Its homepage lists 100+ specialized AI agents, content pipelines (repeatable workflows from idea to launch) and Jasper IQ, a layer that holds brand guidelines, tone and messaging. The CO guide says Jasper is a fit for a solo marketer or small team with a steady volume of on-brand content and quotes a pro plan of $69 a month, or $59 on annual billing, while saying the business plan is custom-priced. The myseoexperts guide says that for a solo founder writing two blog posts a month, a general assistant plus a written style guide is usually enough, which matches my view.

Several people write for one brand and you want the brand rules stored in one place. Skip it if you write a few posts a month alone. Compare it against a general assistant with a saved style guide first.

HubSpot AI agents make sense when your contacts and email already live in HubSpot. HubSpot's page (read October 25, 2026) says its Agent Hub is included in Starter, Professional and Enterprise editions and that many AI features and agents run on HubSpot Credits that you can buy up front or pay as you go. For marketing it describes a campaign agent that plans, a content agent that creates and a nurture agent that converts. Custom agents built in its agent builder use credits, so watch usage. Zapier says HubSpot's strength is its CRM and that the full value shows up once you are all-in on its ecosystem.

Google Ads AI Max for Search is AI you switch on inside an ad platform. Google's help page (read October 25, 2026) calls it a continuous optimization layer for Search campaigns, not a new campaign type, and lists what turning it on does.

FeatureWhat it does (per Google Ads Help)Control
Search term matchingUses broad match, asset-based and landing-page-based technology to reach more searchesOn by default with AI Max; toggle off in ad group settings
Text customizationCreates ad copy from your ads, landing page text and assetsCampaign-level toggle
Final URL expansionSends traffic to the page Google predicts will perform bestRequires text customization; pinned assets are not used if a more relevant URL is chosen
URL exclusions and brand settingsBlock pages, or include and exclude brandsCampaign and ad group controls
ReportingAdds an AI Max match type and a source column to the search terms reportReview it regularly

Two cautions from the same page: AI Max will not work well if a campaign is limited by budget, and if your tracking template does not use the {lpurl} tag correctly, the dynamic landing pages can lead to 404 errors. Test before you switch it on for a campaign that earns money. See Google Ads Help on AI Max.

My take (20 years in IT): Ad automation is only as good as your conversion tracking. Before you turn on any AI feature in an ad account, confirm that a test conversion shows up in your reports, then change one setting at a time so you know what caused a change.

AI Marketing Tools for Small Business and Free AI Tools for Business

The CO guide's advice is the one I repeat to owners: start with the repetitive, time-consuming marketing tasks that need little oversight, such as scheduling social posts, moving new leads from a form into a CRM, personalizing email send times or writing first drafts. Then add complexity.

A lean path looks like this. Month one costs nothing: a free assistant, Canva's free plan and Buffer's free account. If one task clearly saves time, upgrade only that tool. Adding the prices listed above, Claude Pro at $17 a month (annual), Canva Pro at $15 and Descript Hobbyist at $16 comes to about $48 a month, and that assumes you use all three. Prices come from different dates and billing terms, so confirm each on the vendor's page.

My take (20 years in IT): I have watched small teams pay for tools they opened twice. Put a calendar reminder 30 days after you subscribe with one question: did this save me a measurable hour each week? If not, cancel it that day.

Generative AI Tools for Marketing on Reddit? How to Use Forum Advice

Google shows Reddit threads for this search. I could not read Reddit directly, so I am not quoting any thread here. When you read forum advice, check four things: does the poster say what business they run, what they tried before, what they pay, and how long they used the tool. Treat one-line praise as a lead, not proof, and confirm any price or limit on the vendor's page. Several tools in this guide also appear in more than one independent source, which is a stronger signal than any single comment: Canva and Descript show up in both Zapier's June 2026 guide and the CO guide or the myseoexperts guide, ChatGPT is named as a general assistant in all three, and Claude in the Zapier and myseoexperts guides.

Privacy, Copyright and Brand Safety Before You Publish

  • Do not paste private data. Customer lists, contracts and unreleased prices do not belong in a free chatbot. Check each vendor's admin and data controls first. For example, Descript's enterprise plan lists the option to opt out of training and custom retention.
  • Check facts and claims. Buffer's own page warns that AI output can be inaccurate or misleading. Re-check any number an assistant calculates.
  • Check image rights. Read each tool's commercial-use terms. Adobe's approach is described above, and you should confirm the terms on its site.
  • Disclose when it matters. The myseoexperts guide suggests labeling synthetic voices and getting permission for likenesses. Check your ad platform's policies too.
  • Pinned ad text may be skipped. With Google's Final URL expansion on, pinned assets are not used when a more relevant URL is chosen, so do not rely on a pinned legal disclaimer.
My take (20 years in IT): Keep a short AI use note for your business: which tools you use, what data you allow in them, and who approves public content. It takes ten minutes to write and saves you from having to explain it after a mistake.

How to Choose a Generative AI Marketing Tool

  • Start from the task. The CO guide says to define the problem first: saving time on a task, or doing something you cannot do by hand.
  • Match your stack. Some tools, such as HubSpot agents, shine only if you already use the platform. Others integrate broadly.
  • Read the plan, not the headline price. Check credits, seats and limits.
  • Revisit every few months. CO notes pricing and features change often, sometimes every few months.

Final Recommendation

  • Solo owner on a budget: ChatGPT or Claude free, plus Canva free and Buffer free.
  • Content-heavy site or channel: add Descript for video and consider Jasper only when several people write for one brand.
  • Already on a CRM: try HubSpot AI agents with a spending cap on credits.
  • Visual brand: Adobe Firefly and Canva, after you read the commercial-use terms.
  • Paid search: trial Google Ads AI Max on one campaign with good conversion tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best generative AI tools for marketing?

For most small teams, a general assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, a design tool such as Canva, and a scheduler such as Buffer cover most tasks. Add Descript for video, Jasper for team copy, or HubSpot if you use its CRM.

Are there free AI tools for marketing?

Yes. ChatGPT, Claude, Canva, Descript, Buffer and HubSpot all have free options according to their pages or dated guides, with limits on usage, credits or features.

Do I need Jasper if I already use ChatGPT or Claude?

Often not. Jasper is built around stored brand rules and repeatable workflows for teams. A solo owner can usually get far with a general assistant and a written style guide.

Is it safe to use AI-generated images in ads?

It depends on the tool and the ad platform. Read the tool's commercial-use terms, avoid real people's likenesses without permission, and check the ad platform's policies before you publish.

Should I turn on Google Ads AI Max?

Test it on one campaign first. Google says it works best when campaigns are not limited by budget, and it can change which pages and headlines users see, so review your search terms and landing pages after you switch it on.
